Calories Weight Loss – Do Calories Count Anymore?

In the weight loss world, there is so much talk about fat grams, glycemic index, carbohydrates and body mass index, that people have forgotten about counting calories weight loss methods. Do calories count anymore?

They sure do. After all, a calorie is the amount of energy-producing value in a food when it is oxidized in the body. Any energy that is produced but not used is either expelled as waste or stored as fat. So, of course counting calories weight loss plans are important.

Calories are also important at the other end of the weight loss equation. Calories are the measure of how much energy is burned by an activity. Sitting on the couch watching T.V. burns very few calories when compared with running a marathon. That’s why runners are so much thinner than couch potatoes.

For years, all we really knew about losing weight was that we needed to burn more calories than we ate in order to drop pounds. So for years calories weight loss was all we were concerned with. Now, however, we know much more. We know that the calories in a candy bar are not the same as the calories in a salad. The nutritional values are far different.

That’s why we also count fat grams, carbohydrates and all the rest.

There are countless resources available to help gather all the data we need about food and activities. You could easily spend a whole day figuring out exactly how much that food and that exercise will affect your body. It is easy to get lost in the details.

If you get frustrated by having to think about all that data, calories weight loss programs are still valid. It is just simpler to count up how many calories you eat and how much you’ve burned off. While the other data can be nice to have, especially if you’ve reached a plateau and the scale won’t budge, you can make a lot of progress just by tallying calories.

The recommended calorie intake per day varies anywhere from 1,200 to 2,000 for adults, depending on age, gender, activity level, current and goal weights and any existing medical conditions. Your doctor or one of a number of websites can tell you what daily calorie rate you should choose. By sticking to the proper number of calories, weight loss is assured.

Attempting to lose weight can be a bewildering process. By sticking to a calories weight loss program, you can stick to the basic details you need and still see the numbers on the scale move in the right direction.
