Fat Loss Calories – What’s the Best Way to Count Them?

Anyone who has ever tried to lose weight, has tried to count their calories. But there are so many theories out there, it’s hard to know which is best. What is the best way to count fat loss calories?

The old theory is that "a calorie is a calorie is a calorie." It doesn’t matter what you eat as long as you eat fewer calories than you burn in a day. The theory says you could eat candy bars all day and still lose weight. While that may be true, you would also probably die of malnutrition or a related illness.

Then came low-fat diets. The authors of these diets say that fat loss calories do not matter, it’s the number of fat grams. However, low-fat diets can be difficult to sustain because our bodies need some fats as they help in the absorption of some vitamins as well as provide energy.

Now there are low-carbohydrate diets. These diets limit the amount of carbohydrates you eat, such as breads, rice and pasta and replaces them with protein and fats. The theory goes that people who eat large amounts of carbohydrates trigger their body’s to produce more insulin. This insulin, in addition to helping body cells use blood sugar, also triggers fat to be deposited. By limiting carbohydrates, insulin production decreases and stored fat is used up. Fat loss calories are not counted in low-carbohydrate diets. Rather, these programs use the glycemic index and portion control.

These are only some of the diets available on the market. All of them have their advantages and disadvantages. So which one should you choose?

If you are interested in fat loss, your best bet is to see a doctor, who can then determine if there are any health issues you need to consider, such as diabetes, high cholesterol levels etc. He or she may refer you to a nutritionist or a dietitian to help you come up with a meal plan or a list of foods you should or shouldn’t avoid.

Learning about fat loss calories is important so you understand why some foods are healthier than others. If you stick with the basics of nutrition, you won’t be confused by conflicting information posed by the latest weight loss guru.

If you are in generally good health and are serious about losing weight, you should be able to do it sensibly, without worrying about fat loss, calories, diet pills, fad diets or exercise gizmos. By sticking to healthy foods, such as fruits, vegetables, protein and whole grains, avoiding junk food and being sure to get a reasonable amount of exercise each day, you will be able to lose weight quickly and easily.
